Haven't posted in a few days... We had a small Mardi Gras party at our house so cooking took precedence over several things for a bit. I guess you really know that you've become a homeschooler when you use anything and everything for teaching your children. And Mardi Gras is definitely one of those things!
The kids and I ordered two King Cakes from a bakery in Keller, LA (http://www.catdancingproductions.com/guests/kellers.html); they were so great! In addition to the yearly cream cheese filling, we also bought a cake with blueberry cream cheese filling. YUM! We also made crawfish dip, chicken & sausage gumbo, and seafood jambalaya. The kids made their own 'trash' with pretzels, M&Ms, goldfish, and sour gummy worms. Between the trash and the crawfish dip, they could barely stand the wait for our guests to arrive!
Because we move so much, I worry that the children won't remember many of the wonderful flavors that I had at home in Louisiana. Ok, granted that I grew up in North Louisiana, and those flavors are quite different from South LA! Dad often made gumbos and the like from duck or rabbit or squirrel. Fortunately - who knows, maybe you think unfortunately - the kids don't have those foods now except for when we visit grandparents. My oldest son even tried fried alligator - or was it fried frog legs - this past November at the hunting camp...
A little nostalgia here. This time of the year reminds me of many wonderful memories I have. And keeps me going to provide some of those for my chidren, even if they pop up in our homeschool!

Test your state knowledge
Someone sent this to a homeschooling group today. See if you can do it! And why do we expect our children to know it if we don't!!

New Blog/About Me
This is obviously a new blog. I started one last fall that I intended for multiple uses - for family and friends to see what our family was doing, and occasionally to post homeschool information. Well, family wanted pictures and day-to-day activities so I changed the listing to a private blog for invited friends and family only. I'm still a little wierd about posting pictures available to public users. Call me neurotic if you'd like; but, that is a topic on which I will not budge!
Now, I'm creating a blog solely for homeschooling information, more specifically with information about our homeschool and our activities. We do so much on a daily basis that I hope that other homeschoolers find much information and ideas here. And perhaps, they will share their ideas and information too. I will attach links of my favorite homeschooling blogs also; there are so many creative and wonderful moms out there who work hard at homeschooling and have incredible amounts of information.
A little about us: we are a military family. This is one of the reasons that we chose to homeschool. Because we move so often, finding a home available in a good school district is exasperating to say the least. We also travel alot - any military family knows that your schedule never coincides with the schedule for the school! So I can take the children and their school work with me anytime I want to leave, such as when my husband is deployed!
We use alot of Montessori materials, and at this time, I am working on my Montessori 6-9 certification through NAMC. It is a distant course but still very involved. I also enjoy the Charlotte Mason method as well as some of the Classical Education theory. So our little school has become a mix of mainly these three methods. In the future, I would like to read more about Waldorf education. I think these methods blend well, as they put the child first. Maria Montessori always said to allow the child to lead the teacher; the teacher is simply a backdrop for basic guidance in the class.
I hope that you'll find much that you need or want - or didn't even know that you needed or wanted! - here. Please feel free to comment on anything. I am always open to comments! If you are curious about anything that we use, please ask and I will help explain what we do.
Many blessings,
Alicia
